Tour description

Hue is much quieter than Hanoi or Saigon, and at night, the city becomes even calmer—except along the riverfront and a few blocks in the Western Quarter, where streets are closed to traffic to make way for lively outdoor tables.

We will start at the riverside walking street with a rich bowl of crab noodle soup (banh canh cua) with chewy, tender noodles, then head toward the Imperial City for banh khoai: small, thick, crispy turmeric-gold pancakes stuffed with pork, shrimp, and bean sprouts, dipped in a signature peanut sauce unique to the ancient capital. The best banh khoai stalls sit side by side facing the citadel moat and have been there for decades.

Next is nem lui—minced pork wrapped around lemongrass skewers, grilled over charcoal, and rolled at the table with rice paper, tart green banana, starfruit, and fresh herbs, dipped in that same rich, savory sauce. It is an engaging DIY roll, and your guide will show you how to roll the first one.

We will conclude the journey in the Western walking street with grilled snails, grilled rice paper, a cold bottle of Huda beer, and a banh mi from a street cart open until three in the morning.

Small group tour, maximum 10 guests.

Detailed itinerary

Stop 1 - Riverside walking street: We start on the pedestrianised Nguyen Dinh Chieu promenade with your guide on the Perfume River, the Citadel across it, and how Hue's evening works.
Stop 2 - Banh canh cua: Thick chewy tapioca noodles in a crab and pork broth with quail egg and crackling, from a stall that runs all day and into the night.
Stop 3 - Banh khoai: A small, thick, crisp turmeric pancake folded over pork and shrimp, eaten with a fermented soybean and peanut sauce found only in Hue, at a shop facing the Citadel moat.
Stop 4 - Nem lui: Minced pork moulded onto lemongrass stalks and grilled over coals, rolled at the table in rice paper with green banana, starfruit and herbs.
Stop 5 - Western Quarter: A walk into the pedestrianised night blocks around Pham Ngu Lao and Chu Van An, with your guide on the neighbourhood.
Stop 6 - Grilled snails and banh trang nuong: River snails with lemongrass and chilli, and rice paper crisped over coals with egg and dried shrimp, with a cold Huda beer.
Stop 7 - Hue banh mi: A late-night banh mi from a counter that trades until the small hours, with your guide's notes on eating in Hue on your own.

Other notes

Daily departure at 17:30.
The Western walking street operates on Friday and Saturday evenings until late, and on Sundays until around 23:00; the riverside walking street is open most evenings. On quieter weeknights, we spend more time around the Imperial City and the route is more peaceful—something many guests appreciate.
Flooding: The rainy and typhoon season in Central Vietnam runs roughly from September to December, and Hue was the hardest-hit city during the floods in late 2025. We monitor conditions closely and will keep in touch with you.
Spiciness: Hue cuisine is genuinely spicy. Your guide will adjust the heat level for the group.
Dietary requirements: Please let us know at least 48 hours in advance. Hue's pagoda vegetarian tradition makes the meat-free version of this tour truly fantastic.
The Michelin Guide Vietnam does not cover Hue.
Minimum age 8. Approximately 2 km of walking on flat streets, including crossing one bridge.
