Tour description

Hanoi’s famous sights are generally either very old or very modern. This afternoon tour takes you to explore the century in between—the years of French colonial rule, the wars, and especially the “subsidy era,” the period of ration coupons and state subsidies after 1975 that almost every Hanoian over 50 remembers vividly.

We begin at Long Bien, the steel bridge inaugurated by the French in 1902—which was then one of the longest bridges in Asia—and walk along the pedestrian path across the Red River, watching trains rumble along the tracks in the middle. Your guide will share stories of how the bridge was repeatedly bombed during the wars yet resiliently restored, and why Hanoians feel such deep affection for it. Back on the riverbank, we will visit the wholesale market that grew up beneath the bridge and the riverside neighborhoods beyond the dike.

The second half of the journey focuses on the subsidy era. A vehicle will take the group to the Kim Lien and Giang Vo collective housing complexes, built with support from the Soviet bloc in the 1960s and 1970s, where families still live in small apartments with “tiger cage” extensions. Both complexes are slated for redevelopment, so this way of life is gradually fading into the past. The trip concludes at a café steeped in the atmosphere of the subsidy era, where you can chat with your guide about rice ration books, long queues, and the 1986 Đổi Mới reforms.

Other notes

Long Bien Bridge can be visited on foot, but the bridge is temporarily closed for repairs from March to May 2026, with a larger overhaul also planned. If the pedestrian walkway is closed on the day of the tour, the group will view the bridge from the riverbank and the railway station, while spending additional time visiting the collective housing complexes.
The collective housing complexes are residential areas, not museums. Please remain quiet when passing through the stairways and shared courtyards, and do not photograph residents without permission.
The Red River midstream islet (banana island) is being redeveloped as part of the Red River Boulevard project and is therefore not included in this tour itinerary.
The pedestrian walkway on the bridge is quite narrow and runs close to the motorbike lane; please wear closed-toe shoes or sneakers.
The tour is not suitable during heavy rain or storm warnings.
