Tour description

Penang is the most argued-about food city in Southeast Asia, and George Town is a UNESCO World Heritage shophouse grid with a Michelin Bib Gourmand stall every few streets. Hokkien, Teochew, Cantonese, Tamil, Malay and Peranakan communities have been cooking next to each other here for two hundred years, and almost every famous dish is a hybrid of at least two of them.

We start with assam laksa, the sour tamarind and mackerel noodle soup that is Penang's flagship, then cross the road for Teochew cendol - shaved ice, palm sugar and coconut milk - because the two are traditionally eaten together in that order. From there: char koay teow fried over charcoal rather than gas, which changes the dish completely; Nyonya kuih, the Peranakan steamed cakes coloured with pandan and blue pea flower, from a workshop that still makes them by hand; and Hokkien prawn mee with a stock built on prawn heads.

Your guide explains what the Peranakan community is, why charcoal matters, and how the Bib Gourmand listings changed prices and queues in this town.

Small group, maximum 10 guests, entirely on foot within the heritage grid.
Meeting point:

Lebuh Keng Kwee at Jalan Penang, George Town, Penang

We meet at the corner of Lebuh Keng Kwee and Jalan Penang, outside the laksa and cendol stalls. Your guide will have a small sign with your name.

Detailed itinerary

Stop 1 - Assam Laksa (Lebuh Keng Kwee): Penang's signature dish. Thick rice noodles served in a tangy tamarind and mackerel broth with mint, pineapple, and torch ginger flower, topped with a spoonful of prawn paste. This stall is a Michelin Bib Gourmand awardee.
Stop 2 - Teochew Chendul: A shaved ice dessert from the stall across the alley, featuring pandan jelly noodles, coconut milk, and palm sugar. Your guide will explain why locals eat this right after laksa.
Stop 3 - Nyonya Kuih: Steamed, layered traditional Peranakan cakes naturally colored with pandan and butterfly pea flower, sourced from a workshop that still makes them by hand every morning.
Stop 4 - Charcoal-Fried Char Kway Teow: Flat rice noodles stir-fried over high charcoal heat in a wok with cockles, prawns, egg, and Chinese chives. The smoky wok hei from the charcoal fire is the defining touch.
Stop 5 - Hokkien Prawn Mee: Noodles, egg, and sambal served in a rich broth brewed from prawn heads and pork bones. A signature noodle soup debated just as passionately in Penang as laksa.
Stop 6 - Heritage Shophouse Walk: A short guided walk through the UNESCO World Heritage grid (clan water settlements known as "Clan Jetties," five-foot ways, and Peranakan townhouses). Your guide will share how trades and occupations were once divided among the different communities.
Stop 7 - Apom Manis and Kopi: Crispy-edged coconut pancakes from a Bib Gourmand-listed stall, followed by a local coffee to wrap up the tour.

Other notes

Runs Sunday and Tuesday to Saturday at 10:30. We do not run on Mondays, when several George Town stalls on this route close.
Note: the Gurney Drive hawker centre is being relocated to Gurney Bay, with completion expected in 2027. It is not on this route and we would not recommend it to you in the meantime.
Halal: Penang's Chinese hawker stalls generally use pork and lard. For Muslim guests we run an Indian-Muslim route instead - nasi kandar, apom, mee goreng mamak and roti canai - which is excellent and entirely halal. Tell us when you book.
Dietary needs: tell us at least 48 hours ahead. Vegetarian is possible via Indian and Nyonya stops.
Many stalls are cash only and sell out in the early afternoon.
Entirely on foot, about 2 km on flat streets.
