Tour description
After dark George Town's hawker trade moves to the pavements of Lebuh Chulia and Lebuh Kimberley, where carts that have been pushed out to the same spots for decades set up under the five-foot ways. Several of the families here are on their third generation.
We work the two streets in order. Curry mee from a cart that has been running for around eighty years - yellow noodles and vermicelli in coconut curry with cuttlefish, cockles and congealed pig's blood, which your guide will let you skip. Wantan mee from a neighbouring cart, the noodles tossed in dark sauce with char siu. Then Kimberley Street for koay teow th'ng, a delicate clear duck-and-pork soup with flat noodles and fish balls, and duck kway chap, braised duck with rice-sheet noodles in five-spice broth.
We finish with char koay kak, radish cake fried hard with egg, preserved radish and chilli paste, and a bowl of tau fu fah, warm soybean pudding in ginger syrup. Your guide explains the Teochew and Hokkien lineage behind each cart and how the hawker licence system actually works.
Small group, maximum 10 guests, entirely on foot on two adjacent streets.

Cancellation policy
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the tour start time for a full refund. Cancellations within 24 hours are non-refundable. Tours run rain or shine; the carts sit under covered five-foot ways.
Other notes
Runs Sunday and Tuesday to Saturday at 18:30. We do not run on Mondays - the Chulia and Kimberley night carts are closed, and a Monday night tour would have almost nothing open.
This route is pork-heavy and not halal. For Muslim guests we run a nasi kandar and mamak evening instead, which is genuinely excellent in Penang. Tell us when you book.
Dietary needs: tell us at least 48 hours ahead. Vegetarian is difficult on this particular route; the daytime tour suits better.
Cash only at every cart.
Minimum age 10. Entirely on foot, about 1 km on two adjacent streets.
