Tour description
Saigon does not eat breakfast in silence. By seven in the morning, the sidewalks of District 3 are already packed with low tables, pans of eggs and pork sizzling over gas burners, and men reading newspapers while sipping iced coffee. This walking tour follows that exact rhythm.
We start at an eatery that has been serving bánh mì chảo since 1958 — not a sandwich handed through a window, but a cast-iron skillet of sunny-side-up eggs, pork sausage, meatballs, and pâté, served with bread for tearing and dipping. From there, we walk into a residential alley near Pasteur Street to a Northern-style pho shop maintained by the same family since the 1940s and now recommended by Michelin; your guide will explain the differences between Northern and Southern Vietnamese cuisine shaped by this city's history.
The middle portion of the tour explores a genuine neighborhood market where nothing is staged for tourists: banana-leaf parcels, fresh noodles, thirty kinds of herbs, live fish, and a sweet dessert soup stall. Afterward, a short ride brings us to District 1 for crab noodle soup (bún riêu cua) at a street vendor that has stood beside the East Gate of Ben Thanh Market for forty years, before finally heading inside the market's food hall to enjoy bánh bèo, crab tapioca noodle soup (bánh canh cua), and a proper Vietnamese iced milk coffee.
Along the way, your guide will talk about changes to the city map following the 2025 administrative mergers, why Southerners sweeten everything, how to order coffee like a local, and which prices in the market are negotiable. Small group, maximum 10 guests, walking about 2 km plus a short taxi ride.

Detailed itinerary
Stop 1 - Banh Mi Hoa Ma, Cao Thang: Open since 1958. A sizzling hot cast-iron skillet with sunny-side-up eggs, pork sausage, pork meatballs, and pâté, served with a baguette for dipping—the sit-down predecessor of the banh mi you know.
Stop 2 - Pho Minh, Pasteur Alley: A family-run pho eatery from the 1940s tucked inside a residential alley, now recommended by Michelin. Northern-style broth in the heart of a southern city, paired with the historical story that explains it.
Stop 3 - Ban Co Market, District 3: A true neighborhood market with no tourist sections. Your guide will introduce you to fresh herbs, fermented fish sauces, and river fish, and we'll pause to enjoy a glass of sweet dessert soup (che).
Stop 4 - Short transfer to District 1: A 10-minute air-conditioned taxi ride across town, included in the price, as the guide shares insights on the neighborhoods' transformations.
Stop 5 - Bun Rieu Ganh, Le Thanh Ton: Crab noodle soup from a street stall that has stood by the East Gate of Ben Thanh Market for over forty years.
Stop 6 - Ben Thanh Market Food Hall: Steamed banh beo, crab tapioca noodles (banh canh cua), and a stroll through aisles of spices, dried fruits, and coffee.
Stop 7 - Iced milk coffee (Ca phe sua da): Bold drip-filter coffee over sweetened condensed milk and ice, the drink that fuels the rhythm of this city, accompanied by a brief overview from your guide on Vietnamese coffee grades.

Cancellation policy
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the tour starts for a full refund. Cancellations within 24 hours are non-refundable, as food is purchased fresh the morning of the tour. The tour runs rain or shine. If we cancel, you will receive a full refund or a free reschedule to another date.
Other notes
Daily departures, two tours (07:00 and 08:00). Bánh Mì Hòa Mã closes around 11:00, so the 07:00 tour offers a fuller experience.
Addresses: following the July 2025 administrative merger, Ho Chi Minh City's districts were replaced by wards. House numbers remain unchanged, and we still use the familiar district names so they are easily understood by your map apps and taxi drivers.
Construction on Metro Line 2 is currently disrupting traffic around Cao Thang and Nguyen Thi Minh Khai. We will walk this section instead of driving, and the taxi ride will be routed around the construction area.
Special dietary needs: please let us know at least 48 hours in advance. Pork-free, pescatarian, and vegetarian versions of this tour are all possible in Saigon, which is far more vegetarian-friendly than Hanoi.
Wear comfortable shoes and lightweight clothing; the District 3 portion has limited shade.
