Tour description
Saigon runs on women. The com tam eateries, noodle carts, snail restaurants, and che shops that have built the city’s street-food reputation are mostly run by women, often by the same family across two or three generations. This tour is women-led too: your drivers and guides are Saigon women wearing ao dai, Vietnam’s national costume, who grew up with the dishes served at these food stalls and restaurants.
You sit behind your driver as you weave through the evening rush-hour traffic—the best way to understand how this city of nine million motorbikes moves—and stop at around nine places to try foods most visitors never find: banh xeo in a local family’s courtyard, grilled pork com tam, snails prepared six ways, a bowl of hu tieu in Cho Lon, and che, the multilayered sweet desserts Saigon residents often eat after dinner. Between stops, your guide shares stories about family life, the market economy, what it means to run a food stall in such a rapidly changing city, and what the ao dai means to Vietnamese women today.
The drivers are women; everyone is welcome on the tour.
