Tour description
Omoide Yokocho — Memory Lane — is eighty establishments squeezed into two alleys next to Shinjuku Station, most with just six seats, largely grilling offal over charcoal since the immediate post-war years. This place has no room for a tour bus crowd and cares nothing for it. That is why we take a maximum of eight guests, no more.
We start with yakitori and motsuyaki: chicken thigh, skin, liver, and heart grilled over binchotan charcoal, ordered skewer by skewer, eating shoulder-to-shoulder with office workers fresh off the train. Your guide orders in Japanese, explains each cut before you decide, and teaches you the phrases that make a Japanese counter treat you as a guest rather than a complication.
Next, we move through the alleys: a 24-hour standing soba counter where a bowl of noodles costs less than a coffee and is finished in four minutes; a small sake tasting where your guide walks you through junmai, ginjo, and daiginjo paired with seasonal bites; and a stop for back-alley specialties that no guidebook lists — grilled fish collar, house pickles, Japanese potato salad.
We finish with a bowl of ramen at a counter your guide swears by, rather than the one with a line of tourists outside, followed by a short walk through Golden Gai and Kabukicho with an honest rundown of both.
Maximum 8 guests. This tour involves standing, smoke, very tight spaces, and a lot of charcoal. If that sounds like the point, it is.

Detailed itinerary
Stop 1 - Yakitori and motsuyaki, Omoide Yokocho: Chicken and offal skewers grilled over binchotan charcoal at a six-seat counter. Your guide orders skewer by skewer, telling you what each cut is first.
Stop 2 - Standing soba: Buckwheat noodles at a 24-hour standing counter - hot broth or served cold with dipping sauce - eaten in four minutes just like commuters do.
Stop 3 - Alley walk: A short guided walk through both paths of Omoide Yokocho, with your guide explaining how these alleys started as a post-war black market and survived the 1999 fire.
Stop 4 - Sake tasting: Three small pours - junmai, ginjo, and daiginjo - paired with a food plate, along with an easy-to-understand explanation of rice polishing ratios, brewing water, and how to read sake labels.
Stop 5 - Izakaya-style small plates: Alley dishes no one writes about - grilled fish collar, Japanese potato salad, pickles - at a counter handpicked by your guide that evening.
Stop 6 - Walk through Golden Gai and Kabukicho: We walk through both areas. Your guide explains cover charges, photography rules, and why these bars aren't suitable for groups - as well as how to return on your own if you'd like.
Stop 7 - Late-night ramen: A bowl at a counter highly rated by your guide, not where long lines of tourists wait. Tonkotsu, shoyu, or miso depending on where we go.

Cancellation policy
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before tour start time for a full refund. Other notes
Departs daily at 18:00, concludes around 21:30.
Minimum age is 20, the legal drinking age in Japan, as this tour is centered around alcohol-serving counters. We are happy to arrange a private alcohol-free version for families — please ask us.
Maximum 8 guests, and we mean it. The counters in Omoide Yokocho seat only six to ten people in total, so larger groups cannot sit together and would take over the entire venue.
These are small, smoky spaces. Some venues still allow indoor smoking, ventilation is limited, and you will be standing or sitting on backless counter stools for much of the evening. If smoke is an issue for you, please choose one of our other Tokyo tours.
Golden Gai: we walk through and explain the area, but do not drink there. The alleys are private property, photography is prohibited without merchant association permission, and most bars charge an unposted seating fee on top of drinks — it is not somewhere we can responsibly take a group.
Dietary requirements: please notify us at least 48 hours in advance. A route without offal is very easy to arrange, and pescatarian options are also possible. Vegetarian and vegan diets are extremely difficult on this specific route — please choose our Ueno and Yanaka tour instead.
Shinjuku Station has over 200 exits. Please allow an extra fifteen minutes to find the West Exit, and message your guide if you get lost — everyone does their first time.
