Detailed itinerary
Safety Briefing - Phong Nha
As soon as you register for the Son Doong Cave expedition, you will receive advice and assistance in planning the most suitable travel arrangements, including transfers.
You must arrive in Dong Hoi by 3:00 PM at the latest on this day. Company staff will pick you up at Dong Hoi train station/airport and take you to Son Doong Bungalow in Phong Nha.
At around 5:30–6:00 PM, you will meet the safety expert, guide, and other members of the group at the company office. At this time, you will receive safety information and equipment for the expedition before beginning your exploration of Son Doong. The safety briefing is mandatory before conquering Son Doong. Anyone who does not attend the safety briefing may be refused participation in the Son Doong tour and will not be refunded the amount already paid. After the safety regulations have been explained, visitors are required to read carefully and sign the Waiver Form to participate in the tour.
When attending the safety briefing, visitors are requested to bring their trekking shoes and backpack so that the expert can check the quality of the shoes, whether the soles provide sufficient traction for the specific requirements of the tour, and whether the backpack is large enough to hold the necessary items for the journey.
After the tour safety briefing, the entire group, along with the safety expert and guide, will have dinner at Oxalis Home. This is an opportunity for the group members to get to know one another before embarking on the long journey.
After dinner, the group will return to the hotel to rest and prepare for the next day’s trek. Before you return to the hotel, the company will also provide helmets and dry bags so that you can pack your belongings in advance for the porters to carry to the campsite the following morning.

Ban Doong – Hang En
The group will have breakfast at the hotel before being picked up at 09:00. However, you need to pack your luggage into the company-provided dry bag for the porter the night before and leave it at the hotel reception before 07:00 (maximum 7 kg per person). The porter will collect your belongings and take them directly to the campsite, so you will not have access to these items during the trek. Please put any items you need along the way in your personal backpack (approximately 20–30 liters). Your remaining luggage and valuables will be stored at the Office. Guests can refer to the detailed section on what to prepare and bring to ensure they pack appropriately.
The vehicle will take the entire group from the office to the starting point via Victory Road 20 and the western branch of the Ho Chi Minh Trail, arriving at the trekking assembly point at KM35. From here, the group begins walking downhill into the dense forest of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, descending three rocky slopes (the Ba Gian slopes) with elevation differences ranging from 150 m to 350 m across rugged, uneven terrain. After completing the three slopes, the group continues with approximately half an hour of walking through the forest and wading across numerous rivers and streams, following the stream banks to Ban Doong, a small village inhabited by the Bru-Van Kieu ethnic minority community, living in isolation amid the primeval forest.
The group stops to rest, have lunch in the village, and learn about life there. Afterward, the group continues walking through the forest and wading across streams for approximately three hours toward the large river and the entrance to Hang En. Entering through a cave opening with an underground river flowing through it, the group continues climbing over large rocks piled on top of one another to reach the campsite. From this position, you can see the enormous cave entrance, which allows sunlight to shine into the cave, offering a spectacular view of the entire campsite below.
Guests collect their tents and can swim in the crystal-clear blue pool beside the campsite to relax after a long day of walking. Delicious meals prepared by the porter chefs will be ready for you to enjoy, followed by free time to rest and regain your energy before the journey to conquer Son Doong Cave the following morning.
Important note: Any guest who is unable to complete the Son Doong Cave Expedition on this day, struggles to complete the day's route despite receiving extensive assistance from the safety support team, or fails to comply with safety and conservation regulations will be required to turn back and end the tour without a refund. The tour leaders will make the decision to ensure your safety and that of the group.

Cave Entrance - Collapse Dolines 1 Campsite
In the morning, the group will explore deeper into Hang En and follow the rear entrance of Hang En toward the entrance to Son Doong Cave.
The group will stop for lunch at a rest station near the cave entrance before putting on safety harnesses. Here, you will be instructed on how to use the safety equipment and descend into the entrance of Son Doong Cave. The safety team will always be nearby to assist you. As soon as you step down onto the ledge inside the cave, you will feel the cold air and mist flowing out from within, creating the sensation of entering a magical world. With the support of powerful flashlights operated by staff and porters, you will witness the immense size of Son Doong Cave. From here, you can admire the vast cave interior, with a natural pool directly below the cave entrance, surrounded by countless magnificent stalagmites and stalactites.
The group will then continue across the underground river, climb over large rocky slopes and sand hills, and make their way to the Hand of Dog stalagmite area. At around 4:00 p.m., the group will arrive at Son Doong Cave’s first campsite. From here, you can see the hazy Collapse Dolines 1 in the distance. If weather conditions are favorable, you may visit the fossil passage or swim in the nearby underground river before returning to the campsite. The campsite has toilets and changing tents for visitors to use, while a delicious dinner will be ready after you have washed and rested.
At this campsite, you must walk down to the underground river, about 300 meters from the campsite, to wash. The water in the underground river is quite cold, with temperatures ranging from 17°C to 22°C. However, immersing yourself in the cool river after a long and strenuous journey will leave you feeling refreshed. Swimming here is an experience that no visitor should miss on a Son Doong tour.

Garden of Eden - Campsite No. 2
Today involves quite a few sections of climbing over rocky slopes and squeezing through small cave arches to reach Sinkhole 1, “Dinosaur Overlook” – a highlight of the Son Doong exploration journey.
Continue deeper into the cave and climb ropes over several steep rock formations to reach the other side of Sinkhole 1. From here, the scenery becomes magnificent, making it an ideal spot to capture the beauty of Son Doong Cave. If you are lucky, you may admire sunbeams shining through the sinkhole into the cave. Stop for lunch beside beautiful underground pools.
After lunch, the group climbs over rocky slopes to “Garden of Eden” at the second sinkhole, from where you can overlook the entire forest below. After exploring this special forest, the group takes a short rest at the second campsite before continuing into the dark cave to learn about the unique creatures living inside, such as blind spiders, blind fish, cave crickets, and other insects; admire cave pearls and countless masterpieces of stalactites. The group returns to the campsite for dinner and rest.
You can wear a dry pair of shoes throughout the day today. On rainy days, you can bathe in the waterfalls flowing down from the cave ceiling; otherwise, you will need to walk about 500 m to find water for bathing at the end of the day.

Vietnam Wall - Exit - Chày Lập Farmstay
Start the day with a warm cup of coffee while enjoying a distant view of the Garden of Eden. Visitors can admire clouds drifting above the forest and the enchanting cave interior. After breakfast, visitors will put on safety harnesses, after which cave experts will explain how to use the safety equipment in preparation for conquering the Vietnam Wall—one of the most dramatic and exciting activities in the Sơn Đoòng Cave expedition.
The safety team will provide hands-on instruction in rope-climbing techniques, monitor the climb, and control the safety ropes to ensure safety throughout the ascent. To reach the foot of the wall, you will travel by boat across an underground lake; however, if the lake is shallow, the group will walk along a muddy and quite slippery passage. Directly beneath the wall is an approximately 18-meter-high vertical section, which you will climb using a ladder and a safety rope. After completing the steel ladder climb, you will continue up a rocky slope of more than 70 meters using safety equipment and a belay rope to reach the summit of the Vietnam Wall.
This is an adventurous challenge, but with good physical fitness, you can fully conquer it with the support of the safety team. After lunch, the group will leave the cave and trek through the forest to return to the path where the expedition ends and admire Sơn Đoòng. Cold beer and soft drinks will be waiting for the whole group to celebrate completing the Sơn Đoòng Cave expedition before boarding the vehicle back to Chày Lập Farmstay at around 15:00–16:00.
