Tour description
Matunga is Mumbai’s South Indian neighborhood—Tamil Brahmin families settled here in the 1920s around the railway workshops, and its streets still feature flower sellers, sari shops, temple music, and half a dozen vegetarian Indian canteens that open at 5:30 a.m.
We begin at one of them, operating since 1939, with idli so soft it collapses under a spoon, medu vada served with sambar, and South Indian filter coffee poured back and forth between two steel tumblers to cool and aerate it. Your guide will explain the differences between the cuisines of the four South Indian states and why the Mumbai version has evolved.
We then walk through the market—banana leaves, jackfruit, curry leaves, and filter coffee ground to order—with stops to sample Gujarati farsan, sweet and savory snacks eaten between meals, and a banana-leaf thali if you still have room.
We finish at an Irani café, one of the Parsi-run institutions that shaped Mumbai’s café culture, with bun maska—a soft bread roll with a thick slab of butter—and chai. Very few cafés like these remain, and the ones that do are the closest thing to a shared living room for the city.
Small group, maximum 8 guests. One short taxi ride is included.

Detailed itinerary
Stop 1 - Idli, vada and sambar: At a pure-vegetarian canteen open since 1939, serving from half past five. Steamed rice cakes, lentil doughnuts, three chutneys and a bowl of sambar.
Stop 2 - Filter coffee: Decoction and hot milk poured between two steel tumblers from height, which cools it and gives it a head. Your guide explains why the metal matters.
Stop 3 - Matunga market walk: Banana leaves, curry leaf, jackfruit, flowers and coffee powder ground to order, with your guide on how Tamil families settled here.
Stop 4 - Gujarati farsan: Dhokla, khandvi, patra and fafda from a snack shop, with a fried chilli and a sweet.
Stop 5 - Taxi to Fort: A short ride south to Mumbai's colonial core, included in the price.
Stop 6 - Irani cafe: Bun maska with a slab of butter, chai and a mawa cake, at one of the last Parsi-run cafes, with your guide on the Zoroastrian community that built them.
Stop 7 - Vada pav: Mumbai's own - a spiced potato fritter in a bun with dry garlic chutney, from a stall that sells hundreds an hour. The cheapest and best thing in the city.

Cancellation policy
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the tour start time for a full refund. Cancellations within 24 hours are non-refundable. During the monsoon season from June to September, we may cancel at short notice if flooding causes train services to stop—in that case, you will receive a full refund.
Other notes
Departs daily at 07:30. The early start is essential: the best South Indian canteens are at their best before nine, and the city becomes more uncomfortable later in the day.
Monsoon: From June to September, Mumbai often experiences severe flooding, suburban trains are suspended, and the streets become impassable. We continue operating when safety can be ensured, but apply a same-day cancellation policy during these months and strongly recommend choosing October to February for a walking tour.
This tour is entirely vegetarian by nature. A Jain version, without onions, garlic, or root vegetables, is genuinely possible in Matunga—please notify us at least 48 hours in advance. Note that many Gujarati and Jain establishments close during Paryushan in late summer.
Hygiene: sealed bottled water only, no ice, no raw chutney, and no pre-cut fruit. Every stop on this route is a sit-down kitchen with high customer turnover.
Getting there: take the Central line to Matunga. Road traffic in Mumbai makes every car journey unpredictable.
Approximately 2 km of walking plus one taxi ride.
