Descripción del tour
Ayutthaya was the capital of Siam for four hundred years and one of the largest cities in the world before the Burmese sacked it in 1767. What remains, apart from the ruins, is a food culture shaped by the royal court and by the Persian, Portuguese, Chinese, and Muslim traders who once lived here.
This tour lets you taste that legacy. Boat noodles, served in tiny bowls because they were once sold from canal boats and a full bowl would spill—you order four or five at a time and stack them up. Roti sai mai, a Muslim-Thai invention unique to this town: a thin pancake wrapped around strands of spun palm sugar, which looks like cotton candy and is sold at every roadside stall. Royal court sweets made with egg yolk and syrup, a technique the Portuguese brought in the seventeenth century. And the dish Ayutthaya is most famous for, kung mae nam—giant freshwater river prawns split and grilled over charcoal until the head fat turns orange.
Your guide walks you through the island’s two morning markets, including the Muslim-Thai market by the river, and explains how a trading capital created this menu.
Small group, maximum 10 guests, with tuk-tuk transfers included.

Otras notas
Runs daily at 09:30, which is built around the Bangkok trains - the journey takes about 90 minutes to two hours from Krung Thep Aphiwat station, or 90 minutes by minivan or car. Tell us your arrival time when you book and we will confirm whether you will make the start.
This is a daytime tour. The boat-noodle shops and both markets close in the early afternoon, so the route cannot be run in the evening. If you are staying overnight in Ayutthaya, ask us about the Bang Ian night market instead.
Flood risk: the central plains flood between September and November, when the Chao Phraya and Pa Sak rivers rise. The riverside stops and Hua Ro market close first. We monitor conditions and will contact you.
Heat: between 11:00 and 15:00 Ayutthaya is severely hot with little shade. We build in covered stops, but bring a hat and sunscreen.
Dietary needs: tell us at least 48 hours ahead. A halal route is straightforward here because of the Hua Ro Muslim community. Vegetarian is possible with notice.
Most temple sites close at 18:00 if you plan to visit after the tour.
