Descripción del tour

Koh Samui has a reputation for resort food, which is unfair to an island that grows its own coconuts, lands its own fish and cooks a distinctly southern Thai menu. You just have to know where the locals go.

This evening walk starts in Bophut's Fisherman's Village, a strip of hundred-year-old Chinese-Thai wooden shophouses on the north coast, and moves through the food that the island actually eats: squid simmered in coconut milk with local herbs, sour yellow curry with fish, stir-fried stink beans with shrimp paste, and a grilled whole fish packed with lemongrass and served with the sharp green seafood sauce. Coconut turns up everywhere, because Samui was a coconut plantation long before it was a resort, and your guide will explain exactly how the island's coconut economy worked.

We finish with dessert - mango sticky rice in season, or khanom krok coconut pancakes cooked in a dimpled pan at a night stall - and a walk along the beach road.

Small group, maximum 10 guests. Includes a short taxi hop between two clusters.
Meeting point:

We meet at the main entrance to Fisherman's Village on Bophut Beach Road, by the wooden shophouses. Your guide will have a small sign with your name.

Itinerario detallado

Stop 1 - Fisherman's Village shophouses: A guided walk through the hundred-year-old Chinese-Thai wooden shophouse strip, with your guide on how a coconut island became a resort island.
Stop 2 - Squid in coconut milk: Local squid simmered with coconut milk, turmeric and southern herbs - the Samui dish that never makes it onto resort menus.
Stop 3 - Southern yellow curry: Sour yellow curry with fish and vegetables, plus stir-fried stink beans with shrimp paste, eaten with rice at a family kitchen.
Stop 4 - Charcoal-grilled whole fish: A whole sea bass or snapper stuffed with lemongrass and grilled over coals, served with nam jim seafood sauce, at a beachside grill house.
Stop 5 - Night stalls and skewers: Charcoal pork skewers, som tam pounded to order and sticky rice from the evening stalls, with a cold Chang.
Stop 6 - Coconut desserts: Khanom krok coconut pancakes cooked in a dimpled iron pan, or mango sticky rice in season, and a fresh coconut to finish on the beach road.

Política de cancelación y reembolso

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the tour start time for a full refund. Cancellations within 24 hours are non-refundable. Tours run rain or shine. Samui's wettest months are October to December; if a storm closes the beachside stops we move indoors or refund you in full.

Otras notas

Runs daily at 17:30. On Fridays the Fisherman's Village Walking Street runs from about 17:00 to 22:00 and the route takes it in - Friday is the liveliest night and the one we recommend.
Samui's rain season is inverted compared with Phuket and Krabi: the wettest months here are October to December, peaking in November. January to August is reliable.
Getting around Samui: the island's ring road is about 50 km and taxis are expensive with no meters. Hotel pick-up from Chaweng, Lamai or Maenam can be arranged for an extra fee - tell us when booking.
Dietary needs: tell us at least 48 hours ahead. Seafood is central to this tour; a no-seafood route is possible but changes half the stops. Halal options exist on the island and we can route to them with notice.
Minimum age 10. About 1 km of walking plus one short taxi hop.
