Descripción del tour
Luang Prabang is a small UNESCO town at the meeting of the Mekong and the Nam Khan, and it does almost all of its eating before nine in the morning. The market opens before dawn, the noodle shops fill at seven and are wiped down by eleven, and by midday the peninsula is quiet.
We start in Talat Sao while it is still cool. Your guide walks you through the herbs, the river weed, the buffalo skin and the chilli pastes, and you eat khao ji pate, the Lao version of a baguette sandwich with pate, herbs and a sweet chilli sauce, which is the most direct legacy of French Indochina in the country.
Then khao piak sen, a thick hand-cut rice noodle in chicken broth with crisp garlic and fried shallot, from a shop opposite a temple. Then Lao khao soi, which is nothing like the Thai dish - flat rice noodles in a clear broth topped with a fermented soybean and tomato pork sauce. We also taste jeow bong, the sweet chilli paste made with buffalo skin, with sheets of dried Mekong river weed, and finish with Lao coffee and a croissant at a bakery that is part of the town's French inheritance.
Small group, maximum 10 guests, entirely on foot on the flat peninsula.

Itinerario detallado

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the tour start time for a full refund. Cancellations within 24 hours are non-refundable. Tours run rain or shine. During the Pi Mai Lao new year in mid-April most of the town closes and we do not operate.
Otras notas
Runs daily at 06:30. The early start is not a gimmick - the market and the noodle shops are finished by late morning.
The alms-giving ceremony, tak bat, takes place at dawn along the main street. We deliberately do not build it into a paid tour. If you want to see it, your guide will explain how to observe respectfully from a distance: stay seated or standing well back, no flash, do not block the line, cover shoulders and knees, and do not buy rice from the hawkers who sell to tourists - poor-quality rice makes the monks ill.
Pi Mai Lao, the Lao new year, falls in mid-April and effectively closes the town for about a week. We do not run then.
Rainy season runs May to October, with the highest river levels in August and September.
Dietary needs: tell us at least 48 hours ahead. Vegetarian is workable with notice. Lao food uses fermented fish sauce heavily, so tell us if that is a problem.
Cash only, Lao kip. ATMs have low limits and run dry around holidays.
Entirely on foot, about 1.5 km on flat streets.
