Descripción del tour
Osaka's nickname is tenka no daidokoro, the nation's kitchen, and Kuromon Ichiba is where that claim lives. It is a covered arcade nearly six hundred metres long where the wholesale trade starts before dawn and the retail stalls open at nine. Osaka's chefs shop here, and so, increasingly, does everyone else - which is why the hour matters.
We go at half past nine, before the arcade fills. Your guide takes you along it stall by stall: otoro and chutoro cut from a tuna loin in front of you; wagyu skewers seared on a grill at the front of a butcher's; oysters shucked to order and eaten with lemon and ponzu; uni from Hokkaido; kushikatsu; and fruit that costs more than you expect and is worth it once.
Between stalls your guide explains how Osaka's merchant culture produced a food city so different from Kyoto's, what kuidaore actually means, and how to tell a good stall from one that exists for photographs - which, with tourist-priced seafood platters now common, is a genuinely useful skill.
Small group, maximum 8 guests, entirely on foot in a covered arcade.

Itinerario detallado
Stop 1 - Kuromon entrance: Your guide's briefing on the arcade, the etiquette of eating at the stall rather than while walking, and how to read prices here.
Stop 2 - Tuna cut to order: Otoro and chutoro sliced from the loin in front of you at a fishmonger's counter, eaten standing with soy and wasabi.
Stop 3 - Wagyu skewers: Marbled beef seared on a grill at the front of a butcher's shop, salted and served on a stick.

Stop 7 - Takoyaki and a drink: Octopus batter balls from a stall just outside the arcade, with green tea or a cold beer to finish.

Otras notas
Runs Monday to Saturday at 09:30. We do not run on Sundays, when many Kuromon stalls close, and the market is also closed on some public holidays - we will contact you if your date is affected.
Market etiquette: Kuromon now signposts a request not to eat while walking. We eat at each stall's own counter or standing area.
Value: seafood platters aimed at visitors have become common and are often poor value. Your guide compares stalls with you and orders where the locals queue, which is one of the main reasons to take a guide here at all.
Many stalls are cash only.
Dietary needs: tell us at least 48 hours ahead. This tour is seafood and beef centred; a vegetarian route through the arcade is possible but thin, so tell us in advance.
Entirely on foot, about 1.2 km on flat covered ground.
