Descripción del tour

Taiwan is the one place in Asia where Michelin has properly recognised street stalls, and Raohe Street Night Market has three Bib Gourmand entries within the first hundred metres. It is also the best-designed night market in Taipei for a tour: one straight lane, six hundred metres, a temple at one end and a station at the other.

We arrive at half past five, when the stalls are opening and before the queues become forty minutes long. First the pepper bun - pork, spring onion and a great deal of black pepper sealed in dough and slapped onto the wall of a clay tandoor, pulled out blistered and burning hot. Then herbal pork rib soup, simmered with Chinese medicinal herbs until the meat falls off, which is the Taiwanese idea of comfort food. Then lu wei, where you pick braised items from a tray and have them chopped and dressed.

We keep going: oyster vermicelli, stinky tofu for the willing, grilled squid, aiyu jelly with lemon, and finish with a bubble tea made properly. Your guide explains the Fujianese, Hakka, Japanese and mainland threads in Taiwanese food and which famous stalls are coasting.

Small group, maximum 10 guests, entirely on foot in one lane.
Meeting point:

Ciyou Temple, Raohe Street Night Market entrance, Songshan, Taipei

We meet in front of Ciyou Temple at the western entrance to Raohe Street Night Market, five minutes from Songshan station exit 5 on the green line. Your guide will have a small sign with your name.

Itinerario detallado

Stop 1 - Ciyou Temple: We start at the temple gate with your guide on Taipei's night-market culture and how Michelin came to list street stalls here.
Stop 2 - Fuzhou pepper bun, Bib Gourmand: Pork and spring onion with a heavy hit of black pepper, sealed in dough and baked against the wall of a clay oven. Eaten carefully - the inside is molten.
Stop 3 - Herbal pork rib soup, Bib Gourmand: Ribs simmered with Chinese medicinal herbs until the meat slides off the bone, in a clear, slightly bitter, deeply restorative broth.
Stop 4 - Lu wei, Bib Gourmand: Braised tofu, egg, seaweed and vegetables picked from a tray and chopped to order with chilli and sesame oil.
Stop 5 - Oyster vermicelli and stinky tofu: Thick oyster noodle soup with black vinegar, and deep-fried stinky tofu with pickled cabbage for anyone brave enough. Your guide goes first.
Stop 6 - Grilled squid and pork intestine noodles: Charred squid on a stick and a bowl of the rice noodles Taipei does better than anywhere.
Stop 7 - Aiyu jelly and bubble tea: Cold fig jelly with lemon, and a properly made bubble tea with hand-cooked tapioca, to finish.

Política de cancelación y reembolso

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the tour start time for a full refund. Cancellations within 24 hours are non-refundable. Taipei's night markets simply do not set up on typhoon nights or in very heavy rain - if that happens we cancel and refund in full or move you to another date.

Otras notas

Runs daily at 17:30. We start early on purpose: the pepper bun stall regularly sells out by 21:00 on weekends and the queue at 20:00 can be forty minutes.
Tuesday to Thursday are noticeably more comfortable than weekends.
Typhoon season runs roughly July to October. Vendors do not set up in heavy rain, so we operate a same-day cancellation and rebooking policy.
Cash only at almost every stall; your guide handles payment on the tour.
Lunar New Year week closes most stalls - tell us if you are travelling then and we will advise.
Dietary needs: tell us at least 48 hours ahead. Taiwan is one of the easiest places in Asia for vegetarians, with a strong Buddhist vegetarian tradition, and we can build a fully vegetarian route with notice.
Entirely on foot, about 1.2 km on flat ground.
