Descrizione del tour
Pontocho is a five-hundred-metre lane between the Kamo River and Kiyamachi, barely two metres wide, lined with wooden machiya where the ground floor is a restaurant and the upper floors are private. It is one of Kyoto's geisha districts and one of the best places in Japan to eat and drink at a counter.
We start with obanzai, the Kyoto home cooking that is served from earthenware bowls on a counter and chosen by pointing: simmered pumpkin, sesame spinach, kyo-yasai vegetables, grilled fish. Your guide explains why Kyoto cooking is so restrained and what the seasonal rules actually are. Then yakitori over binchotan charcoal at a counter - thigh, skin, liver, gizzard, ordered stick by stick with your guide translating the cuts.
Between the two we do a sake tasting, three pours side by side, with an explanation of rice polishing, brewing water and why Kyoto's Fushimi district produces softer sake than anywhere else. We finish with a walk along the Kamo River and a small sweet.
Small group, maximum 8 guests, because the counters here seat eight at most.

Altre note
Runs daily at 18:00.
Minimum age 20, Japan's legal drinking age, because this tour includes a sake tasting and counter bars. We can run a private family version without alcohol - ask us.
Maximum 8 guests and we mean it: Pontocho counters seat eight to twelve people in total.
Photography: Pontocho is a working geisha district. Photographing geiko or maiko without permission is prohibited and fines apply on the neighbouring Hanamikoji street. Your guide will tell you exactly where you may and may not shoot.
Dietary needs: tell us at least 48 hours ahead. Vegetarian is difficult in a yakitori and dashi context but a pescatarian or vegetable-focused obanzai route is genuinely good - please tell us when you book.
Entirely on foot, about 1.5 km on flat streets.
