Descrizione del tour
Binondo was established by the Spanish in 1594 for Catholic Chinese settlers, which makes it the oldest Chinatown in the world. It is still a working commercial district of gold dealers, herbalists and family restaurants, several of which have been in the same hands since the 1930s.
The food here is Hokkien cooking that has been in the Philippines for four hundred years and become something else. Mami, a noodle soup brought by Hokkien migrants and named by a Manila cook in the 1930s. Kuchay ah, chive dumplings. Oyster cake, a deep-fried patty you will not find in China. Fresh lumpia, a soft crepe packed with vegetables and peanuts and drowned in sweet garlic sauce, rolled in a courtyard off a narrow lane. Fried siopao, a steamed bun given a crisp bottom on a griddle. And hopia, the flaky mung bean pastry that a Binondo bakery famously reinvented with purple yam.
Your guide explains the Chinese-Filipino story behind each dish, takes you down Carvajal Street's produce lane, and finishes with tsokolate, the thick Spanish-style hot chocolate that came the other way across the Pacific.
Small group, maximum 10 guests, entirely on foot, about 1.5 kilometres.

Politica di cancellazione

Altre note
Runs Monday to Saturday at 10:00. We do not run on Sundays, when one of the anchor stops on this route is closed.
Binondo is a daytime district. The best window is 10:00 to 14:00; stalls sell out or shut in the mid-afternoon and the area thins out and gets dark after about 18:00. We do not offer an evening Binondo tour, and we would be sceptical of anyone who does.
Safety: Binondo is busy and generally fine in daylight, but it is crowded and phone snatching does happen. Your guide will brief you; keep bags in front and phones away when walking.
Typhoon season runs roughly June to November and brings street flooding.
Dietary needs: tell us at least 48 hours ahead. This route is pork-heavy. A pescatarian route is possible; vegetarian is difficult here and we would steer you elsewhere.
Chinese New Year turns the district into a festival and some family shops close - tell us if you are travelling then.
Entirely on foot, about 1.5 km on flat but crowded streets.
