Descrizione del tour
Mombasa's Old Town is Swahili, which means Arab, Persian, Indian and Bantu all at once, layered over a thousand years of monsoon trade. The food shows every one of those influences and none of it exists in Nairobi.
We start with the Swahili breakfast: mahamri, cardamom and coconut doughnuts, dipped into mbaazi, pigeon peas cooked in coconut milk. Then kahawa chungu, bitter coffee poured from a brass pot by a man walking the lanes with a charcoal brazier, drunk in a tiny cup with a piece of halwa.
We eat biryani at a place that has been serving it since the 1950s, where the rice is layered and steamed and the spicing is Swahili rather than Indian, and viazi karai, potatoes in turmeric batter with tamarind chutney. Then the lanes themselves: carved Zanzibari doors, Omani balconies, and a guide who can read them.
The evening departure finishes on the waterfront, where mishkaki skewers, cassava and madafu, fresh coconut water drunk from the shell, come out at dusk.
Small group, maximum 8 guests, entirely on foot.

Politica di cancellazione
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the tour start time for a full refund. Cancellations within 24 hours are non-refundable. Tours run rain or shine.
Altre note
Runs daily, with a morning departure at 08:00 and an evening one at 16:00. The heat and humidity between eleven and four make a midday tour genuinely unpleasant, which is why there is not one.
Safety: we run Old Town with a local guide and in daylight or early evening only. Mombasa Old Town and the Likoni ferry area are named as crime hotspots in travel advisories, and we would not send you wandering there alone after dark. Your guide stays with the group throughout.
Dress: this is a majority-Muslim neighbourhood. Please cover shoulders and knees; women may prefer a light scarf.
Ramadan: daytime trade largely stops and the evenings become the best street-food window of the year. We run evening-only during Ramadan and it is worth planning around. Please do not eat or drink publicly during daylight hours in that month.
Water and hygiene: bottled water only. We use high-turnover fryers and grills and avoid anything that has been standing.
Payment: M-Pesa plus small Kenyan shilling notes; your guide pays throughout.
Dietary needs: tell us at least 48 hours ahead. Vegetarian is straightforward via mbaazi, viazi karai, bhajia and coconut rice.
About 1.5 km of walking on flat but uneven lanes.
