Tour description
Xe Pian National Protected Area south of Pakse is one of Laos’s most important protected areas, with the Kiet Ngong wetlands recognized as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance. Kiet Ngong Village is a community-based tourism destination where local residents work as local guides.
You will take a small boat through the wetlands to observe waterbirds and vegetation, then hike up Phou Asa Hill, home to a mysterious stone structure on its summit, traditionally believed to be the fortress of a 19th-century Lao female military leader, overlooking the plains and dipterocarp forests.
On the way back, the tour visits Um Muang Temple (Oum Muang), a 9th–10th-century Khmer temple ruin hidden in the forest, with moss-covered stone gates and bas-reliefs that few tourists know about.
