Tour description
Wat Phu (Vat Phou) is a Hindu temple complex—later Buddhist—built by the Khmer, predating Angkor Wat by several centuries. The temple complex stretches from the banks of the Mekong River up the slopes of Phou Kao, a mountain with a naturally occurring linga-shaped peak considered sacred. In 2001, Wat Phu and the Champasak cultural landscape were recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
You will follow a stone-paved ceremonial pathway alongside reservoirs, pass two sandstone palaces, then climb tree-shaded steps beneath frangipani trees to the main temple above—where reliefs of Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma can be seen, along with a sacred spring flowing from the mountain cliff. From here, the vast plain and the Mekong River unfold panoramically.
In the afternoon, cross the river to Don Daeng Island—a long island in the Mekong with peaceful villages, sandy beaches, and rice fields—for a relaxing cycling excursion before returning to Pakse.
