Tour description
Weaving is a traditional craft practiced by Lao women, with each ethnic group having its own patterns and techniques; the sinh skirt is considered a source of pride for families. In the areas surrounding Luang Prabang, many weaving workshops still use silk and cotton threads, as well as dyes made from indigo leaves, tree bark, seeds, and roots.
During the class, artisans will introduce various dye plants and explain how to create natural colors. In the morning, you will dye your own scarf using the tie-dye technique to create patterns. After lunch, you will learn how to set up a loom and weave basic patterns, with step-by-step guidance from the artisan.
At the end of the class, you will take home your indigo-dyed scarf and a sample of fabric you wove yourself. The class is friendly and suitable even for those who have never handled a needle and thread.

Detailed itinerary
Morning (08:30): Pick-up at your hotel and transfer to the riverside weaving workshop (approximately 15 minutes).
09:00: Learn about the materials, dye plants, and silk-making process. Practice indigo dyeing a scarf using the tie-dye technique.
Lunch (12:00): Enjoy a Lao lunch at the workshop.
Afternoon (13:00): Learn to set up the loom and weave basic patterns with an artisan.
15:30: Collect your dried scarf and handwoven fabric sample. Transfer back to your hotel. 16:00: Tour ends.

Free cancellation with a 100% refund when notified at least 24 hours before departure. Cancellations made within 24 hours of departure are non-refundable. In the event of bad weather or attraction closures required by the authorities, we can help reschedule the tour or provide a full refund.

The tour is normally led by an English-speaking local guide; Vietnamese-, French-, Chinese-, or Thai-speaking guides can be requested (please inform us when booking, subject to guide availability).
The price applies per guest and is based on a private tour for groups of 2 or more guests. Larger groups receive better rates; please contact us.
Visa: international visitors need a Laos visa (apply for an e-visa online before the trip or obtain a visa at international airports and international border crossings); citizens of ASEAN countries are visa-exempt according to regulations. Passports must be valid for at least 6 months.
Old clothing is recommended because the dye may stain clothes. A half-day class focusing only on indigo dyeing can be arranged (contact us for a quote).
