Tour description
Bon Om Touk (Water Festival) takes place on the full moon of the month of Kadeuk (around November), marking the time when the Tonle Sap River reverses its flow back toward the Mekong after the rainy season—a unique natural phenomenon in the world. Over three days, millions of people from the provinces flock to Phnom Penh.
The highlight is the boat races on the Tonle Sap River in front of the Royal Palace: long dugout boats, each rowed by dozens of people from villages, provinces, and organizations, compete from morning until afternoon. In the evening, magnificent illuminated boats (Loy Pratip) parade along the river as fireworks light up the sky. On the full-moon night, people perform the moon salutation ceremony (Sampeah Preah Khe) and eat Ak Ambok—flattened rice mixed with coconut and bananas.
The program includes a hotel near the riverside, a guide who takes you to the best viewing spots, and visits to the Royal Palace and National Museum while the city is celebrating.
