Tour description
Hoi An is captivating, and most visitors simply stroll around and admire it. This walking tour is for those who want to truly understand what they are seeing. From the 16th to the 19th century, this place was known as Faifo, one of Southeast Asia’s busiest trading ports, where Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, and Dutch merchants moored their boats while waiting for the monsoon winds. Every architectural structure here is a living testament to that era of trade.
We begin early in the morning, while the streets are still quiet, with our guide introducing the town from an architectural perspective: Chinese assembly halls built by the Fujian, Cantonese, and Teochew merchant communities, featuring exquisite ceramic dragons and curling incense coils; long, narrow “tube houses” with storefronts facing the street, inner courtyards open to the sky, and warehouses facing the river; yin-yang tiled roofs, carved “door eyes” believed to ward off evil spirits, and even floodwater marks etched into the walls.
We will use Hoi An Ancient Town entrance tickets to go inside the Japanese Covered Bridge—reopened in 2024 after 19 months of restoration—as well as one assembly hall and one historic merchant house. Along the way, we will admire many other buildings from the street before ending by the river as the market begins to bustle.
Since July 2025, Hoi An has been part of Da Nang City; the ancient town is located within Hoi An Ward.
