Tour description

At dusk the electric signs in Hoi An go off and several thousand silk lanterns come on, the river fills with paper candles, and the food moves outdoors. The night market on the An Hoi islet, a single lane of a few dozen stalls, is where the town eats after dark.

We cross the pedestrian bridge as the lights come up and work down the lane: pork and squid skewers over charcoal, banh trang nuong - rice paper crisped over coals with egg, dried shrimp and spring onion, which locals call Vietnamese pizza - corn cheese, grilled scallops, and sugarcane juice pressed in front of you. Your guide orders in Vietnamese, explains what each stall is known for and steers you away from the ones that exist only for photographs.

We finish back on the Old Town side with a bowl of che, the sweet bean and jelly soup that is Vietnam's answer to dessert, sitting by the river while the candle boats go past.

Small group, maximum 10 guests, entirely on foot, about 1.5 kilometres.

An Hoi Bridge, Old Town side, Hoi An

We meet at the Old Town end of the An Hoi pedestrian bridge, beside the boat ticket sellers. Your guide will have a small sign with your name.

Detailed itinerary

Stop 1 - An Hoi bridge at dusk: We cross as the lanterns come on, with your guide on how the lantern trade works and why the Old Town cuts its electric lights.
Stop 2 - Charcoal skewers: Marinated pork, chicken and squid grilled to order on the night-market lane, eaten standing with a cold Larue beer or iced tea.
Stop 3 - Banh trang nuong: Rice paper crisped over coals and topped with egg, dried shrimp, spring onion and chilli sauce - the snack the whole lane smells of.
Stop 4 - Grilled seafood: Scallops with spring onion oil and peanuts, or grilled river shrimp, from the seafood end of the market.
Stop 5 - Sugarcane juice and corn cheese: Cane pressed in front of you with kumquat, plus a cup of sweetcorn with butter and cheese - the town's most popular guilty pleasure.
Stop 6 - Che by the river: A sweet bean, lotus seed and jelly soup on the Old Town bank, with the candle boats going past and your guide's notes on the full-moon lantern nights.

Cancellation policy

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the tour start time for a full refund. Cancellations within 24 hours are non-refundable. Tours run rain or shine. During the October to December flood season the riverfront can close at short notice; if that happens we reroute inland or refund you in full.

Other notes

Runs daily at 17:00.
Full-moon lantern nights, on the 14th day of each lunar month, are beautiful and extremely crowded. The Old Town turns off its electric lighting, crowds are heavy and several vendors close early. We still run, but the walk is slower and we recommend booking another night if you want a relaxed pace.
Flood season runs late October to mid December. The An Hoi islet and the riverfront are the first areas to flood.
Dietary needs: tell us at least 48 hours ahead. Vegetarian works well on this route.
Minimum age 8; younger children are welcome but the lane is crowded and the charcoal grills are at child height.
Entirely on foot, about 1.5 km on flat streets and one pedestrian bridge.
