Tour description

Quy Nhon is a coastal city between Da Nang and Nha Trang that most travellers drive past, which is why its food is still priced for locals and cooked for locals. It has three dishes worth the detour.

Banh xeo tom nhay - jumping shrimp pancake - is made with tiny live shrimp that go into the batter still moving, so they curl as they hit the oil. The pancakes are small, thin and intensely crisp, and you wrap them in rice paper with green mango, cucumber and herbs and dip them in a nutty fish sauce. It is a breakfast dish here.

Bun ram is the other one: a bowl of thin noodles with a broth made from the tiny paddy crabs of the region, topped with a crisp fried spring roll baton that you break into the soup. Nobody makes it outside this province.

We also eat bun ca with hand-pounded fish cake, goi ca - raw sardine salad cured in lime with roasted peanut and green mango - and banh hoi chao long, fine woven rice noodles with herbs and a bowl of offal porridge.

The route needs a scooter to link the morning noodle shops, which are scattered.

Small group, maximum 8 guests.
Meeting point:

48 Ngo Gia Tu Street, Quy Nhon

We meet outside the bun ram shop at 48 Ngo Gia Tu. Your guide will have a small sign with your name.

Detailed itinerary

Spot 1 - Bun Ram: Thin noodles in a flavorful broth made from small field crabs, topped with crispy spring rolls that are crushed right into the bowl. A specialty originating in Quy Nhon.
Spot 2 - Bun Ca: A clear fish broth noodle soup featuring handmade fried fish cakes, savored at a family-run eatery spanning three generations.
Spot 3 - Banh Xeo Tom Nhay: Small, crispy Vietnamese savory pancakes made with fresh tiny shrimp that curl the instant they hit the hot oil. Enjoyed rolled in rice paper with green mango, cucumber, and fresh herbs.
Spot 4 - Goi Ca: A coastal specialty of raw sardines cured in lime and vinegar, combined with fragrant roasted peanuts, green mango, and fresh herbs, then wrapped and dipped in sauce.
Spot 5 - Banh Hoi Chao Long: A signature Central Coast breakfast pairing delicate woven rice vermicelli topped with scallion oil and herbs with savory pork offal congee.
Spot 6 - Market Stroll: Walk through a local market with a guide to learn about the life of fishing fleets, the fish sauce trade, and the rich culinary culture of Binh Dinh Province.

Other notes

Runs daily at 07:00. The morning noodle shops sell out at the first sitting, which is why the start is early.
Transport: the morning kitchens are spread across the city, so this tour uses scooter transfers with you riding pillion. Helmets are provided. If you would rather not ride, tell us and we will run it by car for an extra fee.
Goi ca is raw fish cured in lime. It is optional and we will substitute a cooked dish on request.
Flooding: central Vietnam's typhoon and flood season runs roughly September to December.
Addresses: since July 2025 Binh Dinh province has been merged into Gia Lai province, with Quy Nhon as the capital. The name Binh Dinh is retired administratively even though everyone still uses it locally, and the district tier is gone. Street numbers are unchanged.
Dietary needs: tell us at least 48 hours ahead. Vegetarian is possible via banh xeo with mushroom, banh hoi and banh it, with notice.
Michelin's Vietnam guide does not cover Quy Nhon.
About 1 km of walking plus scooter transfers.
