Tour description
Just a 30-minute flight from Vientiane, the Xieng Khouang Plateau reveals a very different chapter of Laos: mysterious stone jar sites dating back approximately 2,000 years, cool green pine-covered hills, and wartime stories still etched into the land.
You will visit the three main jar sites, Sites 1, 2, and 3 (a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2019); explore the ancient town of Muang Khoun – the former capital of the Phuan Kingdom – with That Foun Stupa and Wat Phia Wat temple, where only a Buddha statue remains amid collapsed brick columns; and visit Ban Napia Village, where locals melt metal from wartime bombs and ammunition to make spoons and bracelets.
On the third day, you will visit Tham Piu Cave – where hundreds of sheltering civilians were killed during the war in 1969 – and the MAG information center, before flying back to Vientiane.
