Tour description
Just about 1 hour and 30 minutes from Vientiane, Phou Khao Khouay is a vast national protected area featuring sandstone mountains, evergreen forests, rivers, streams, and waterfalls—the habitat of wild elephants, gibbons, and many bird species. It is the closest nature destination to the capital, yet remains relatively uncrowded.
The tour takes you on a 2–3-hour forest trek along trails with a local guide, visiting Tad Xay Waterfall, with its many successive rocky tiers, and Tad Pha Xay Waterfall, which cascades into a pool below. You can cool off in the pool at the foot of the waterfall during the dry season and enjoy a Lao-style picnic lunch by the stream.
On the way back, the vehicle stops at a village near the protected area to learn about agricultural life and community-based tourism.

Other notes
Safety: some rural areas of Laos still contain unexploded ordnance (UXO) from wartime; always stay on marked trails and follow the guide’s instructions.
The tour is normally led by an English-speaking local guide; Vietnamese-, French-, Chinese-, and Thai-speaking guides may be requested (please indicate this when booking, subject to guide availability).
The price applies per guest, based on a private tour for groups of 2 or more guests. Larger groups receive better rates; please contact us.
Visas: international travelers need a Laos visa (apply for an e-visa online before the trip or obtain a visa at international airports and international border crossings); ASEAN citizens are visa-exempt according to regulations. Passports must be valid for at least 6 months.
During the rainy season (approximately July–September), the waterfalls have more water but the trails are slippery, and the route may be shortened; do not swim at the waterfalls when water levels are high. Trekking shoes, swimwear, and insect repellent are recommended.
