Descripción del tour
Jakarta is a night city. The heat drops, the traffic thins a little, and two streets in the centre fill with charcoal smoke and plastic stools. This tour works both.
Jalan Sabang is a five-hundred-metre strip that has been grilling satay since the 1970s. We eat chicken satay with thick peanut sauce and compressed rice cake at the cart that everyone argues is the best, plus soto Betawi - a milky beef soup with tomato and fried shallot that is Jakarta's own - and nasi goreng kambing, goat fried rice cooked in an enormous wok over a roaring fire.
Then a short ride to Pecenongan, which does not really get going until nine and runs until two in the morning. Here we eat kepiting saus padang, crab in a thick chilli sauce you attack with a mallet and your hands, and finish with martabak - either the savoury egg-and-beef version folded in a pan, or the sweet one, a thick pancake split and packed with chocolate, cheese and condensed milk, which is the single most Jakarta thing you can eat.
Small group, maximum 10 guests, with a taxi transfer included.

Itinerario detallado
Stop 1 - Chicken satay, Jalan Sabang: Charcoal-grilled chicken skewers with thick peanut sauce, kecap manis and lontong rice cake, from a cart that has worked this street since the 1970s.
Stop 2 - Soto Betawi: Jakarta's own soup - beef and offal in a milky coconut-and-broth base with tomato, fried shallot and lime. Ordered your way, with or without offal.
Stop 3 - Nasi goreng kambing: Goat fried rice cooked in a metre-wide wok over a roaring fire, heavy with sweet soy and spice, at a Sabang street stall.
Stop 4 - Taxi to Pecenongan: A short ride to the late-night street, included in the price.
Stop 5 - Kepiting saus padang: Crab in a thick chilli and tomato sauce, cracked with a mallet and eaten with your hands and a pile of napkins. Jakarta's great late-night dish.
Stop 6 - Grilled seafood sides: Grilled squid or prawns with sambal and kangkung stir-fried with garlic, to round out the table.
Stop 7 - Martabak: The finish. A thick pancake split and filled with chocolate, cheese, peanut and condensed milk, or the savoury egg-and-beef version, from a Pecenongan institution.

Política de cancelación y reembolso
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the tour start time for a full refund. Cancellations within 24 hours are non-refundable, because the crab is ordered in your name. Tours run rain or shine, but heavy rainy-season flooding can close Pecenongan - we will reroute or refund in full.
Otras notas
Runs daily at 18:00.
This route is halal-friendly: satay, soto Betawi, nasi goreng kambing and martabak are all halal at the stalls we use, and Pecenongan's seafood is too. Alcohol is not part of this tour. If you specifically want the Chinese-Indonesian and pork side of Jakarta, take our Glodok morning walk instead.
Traffic: Jakarta's evening peak runs 16:30 to 20:00. We start at 18:00 deliberately and keep the route inside two clusters with one short hop, because a longer transfer can eat an hour.
Rainy season runs November to March and brings flash flooding in low-lying central districts.
Dietary needs: tell us at least 48 hours ahead. A vegetarian route is possible in Jakarta with notice, though it changes several stops.
Minimum age 10. About 1.5 km of walking plus one taxi transfer.
