Descrizione del tour
Mohammed Ali Road and the Bohri Mohalla lanes behind it are the centre of Muslim Mumbai and the city's best night eating. The Dawoodi Bohra community here came from Gujarat and Yemen, and their cooking is unlike anything else in India.
We eat nalli nihari - beef or mutton shank simmered overnight with marrow until the meat dissolves, served with a squeeze of lime, ginger and a soft roti - at a restaurant that has been at it since the 1920s. Then seekh kebabs from the charcoal grills set up on the pavement, and baida roti, a paper-thin bread folded around spiced mince and egg and fried flat on a griddle.
Your guide explains the Bohra community's history, the difference between Mughlai and Bohri cooking, and how this street empties and fills according to the religious calendar.
We finish with sweets: malpua, a fried pancake soaked in syrup and eaten with rabri; phirni, a chilled ground-rice pudding served in a clay pot; and a glass of falooda with rose syrup and basil seeds.
Small group, maximum 8 guests, entirely on foot.

Politica di cancellazione
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the tour start time for a full refund. Cancellations within 24 hours are non-refundable. During the June to September monsoon we cancel at short notice if the street floods - full refund in that case.
Altre note
Runs daily at 19:00.
Ramadan: during Ramadan this street becomes one of the most extraordinary food events in Asia, with a night bazaar running from sunset until around three in the morning and dozens of stalls that exist only for those thirty days. Ramadan moves about eleven days earlier each year; ask us when you book and we will tell you whether your dates fall inside it and adjust the tour.
Outside Ramadan the street is still busy every night but the bazaar stalls are not there, and we do not pretend otherwise.
This is a meat tour with no meaningful vegetarian version. Vegetarians should take our Matunga breakfast walk, which is entirely vegetarian.
Monsoon: June to September brings flooding; we operate a same-day cancellation policy in those months.
Dress: please cover shoulders and knees. This is a conservative neighbourhood.
Hygiene: sealed bottled water only, no ice, no raw chutneys, no pre-cut fruit. We use high-turnover kitchens that cook to order.
Entirely on foot, about 1.5 km in crowded lanes.
