Tour description
Laos was once known as the “Land of a Million Elephants” (Lan Xang), but today the number of wild and domesticated elephants has declined sharply. Responsible sanctuaries around Luang Prabang provide elephants that once worked in the logging industry with an environment closer to nature.
During the tour, a mahout introduces you to elephant behavior and care. You will help prepare food such as bananas, sugarcane, and pumpkins and feed the elephants. The group then walks with the herd along a forest trail to a stream, observing the elephants forage, play, and bathe—from a safe distance and following the mahout’s instructions.
A Lao-style lunch is served at the sanctuary. The tour does not include elephant riding or performance activities; part of the fee supports elephant care and the mahout community.
