Tour description
Phnom Kulen is a national park approximately 50 km north of Siem Reap and is considered by Cambodians to be the most sacred mountain in the country. It was here that King Jayavarman II declared independence and established the Khmer Empire in 802.
During the tour, you will see the Thousand Lingas River, where the riverbed is carved with hundreds of linga symbols and images of deities dating from the 11th century; the water flowing over them is considered holy water. Next, visit Preah Ang Thom Temple on the mountaintop, home to a giant reclining Buddha statue carved directly into the rock, where local people make pilgrimages every day.
In the afternoon, you can cool off at Kulen Waterfalls and enjoy a local-style picnic lunch in bamboo huts beside the stream. This is an ideal nature-and-spirituality tour to combine with days exploring the Angkor temples.
