Tour description
Lao cuisine revolves around sticky rice eaten by hand, various jeow dips made from roasted chilies, eggplant and herbs, and dishes featuring plenty of fresh herbs. Luang Prabang also has its own specialties, such as or lam – a stew made with wild sakan pepper, and khai phen – crispy fried riverweed.
The class begins at Phosy Market – the town’s largest market – where the chef introduces you to wild greens, spices and Mekong River fish. In the outdoor kitchen in the garden, each participant has their own cooking station to learn how to soak and steam sticky rice using traditional methods, make jeow mak khua (roasted eggplant jeow), cook or lam, mix lap (a minced meat salad with toasted rice powder), and wrap steamed fish in banana leaves.
The class concludes with a communal meal featuring the dishes you have prepared, along with a recipe booklet to take home. Morning and afternoon classes are available, with vegetarian options.
