A culinária da região do City Bowl, na Cidade do Cabo, é um ponto de encontro entre as tradições gastronômicas Cape Malay, africâner, xhosa, indiana e portuguesa, reunidas em poucos quarteirões fáceis de percorrer a pé entre a montanha e o porto.
Começamos com o biltong — que não é jerky, e o seu guia explicará o porquê: carne curada ao ar livre, temperada com sementes de coentro e fatiada de forma grossa — acompanhado de droëwors, enquanto visitamos a Greenmarket Square e os antigos alojamentos de escravos.
Depois vem o Gatsby: uma baguete de cerca de 30 centímetros, aberta e recheada com batatas fritas, bife masala ou lulas, alface e molho peri-peri, criada em Cape Flats na década de 1970 e pensada para ser compartilhada por quatro pessoas. Vamos dividir um sanduíche, exatamente como manda a tradição.
Também vamos experimentar boerewors, a linguiça colonial temperada com sementes de coentro e grelhada no carvão em um braai; bunny chow, um pão oco recheado com curry originário da comunidade indiana de Durban; e uma porção de snoek, peixe emblemático do Cabo, defumado e servido com geleia de damasco.
Finalizamos com uma degustação sentada de vinhos do Cabo — chenin blanc e pinotage, a casta desenvolvida na África do Sul — acompanhada por uma fatia de torta de leite.

We meet in Greenmarket Square in the city centre. Your guide will have a small sign with your name.
Roteiro detalhado
Stop 1 - Biltong and droëwors: Air-dried beef with coriander and vinegar, cut thick, plus dried sausage. Your guide explains why calling it jerky will not win you friends here.
Stop 2 - Greenmarket Square: A short guided walk through the square and past the old slave lodge, with your guide on the city's founding and what it was built on.
Stop 3 - The Gatsby: A foot-long roll filled with chips, masala steak and peri-peri, invented in the Cape Flats in the 1970s to feed four workers for the price of one. We share one, which is how it is meant to be done.
Stop 4 - Boerewors off the braai: Coriander-spiced farm sausage grilled over wood, with pap and chakalaka, and your guide on why a braai is not a barbecue.
Stop 5 - Bunny chow: A hollowed half-loaf filled with bean or mutton curry, brought to the Cape from Durban's Indian community.
Stop 6 - Smoked snoek: The Cape's own fish, smoked and eaten with apricot jam and bread - an odd-sounding combination that works.
Stop 7 - Cape wine and milk tart: A seated tasting of chenin blanc and pinotage, the grape South Africa created, with a slice of cinnamon-dusted milk tart.

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the tour start time for a full refund. Cancellations within 24 hours are non-refundable. Tours run rain or shine; Cape Town's winter, roughly June to August, is the wet season.

Minimum age 18 because of the wine tasting. We can run a private family version with juice instead - ask us.
Safety: the CBD is fine in daylight and in a group in the early evening on the main streets. We keep phones away in the square, we use e-hailed cars after dark, and we do not walk through the Company's Garden or the Grand Parade after dusk.
On township food tours: we are often asked, and our answer is that we only run them in partnership with a Langa-based operator, with a named host household, a real meal at a community kitchen, a published revenue split and a group of no more than eight. We do not do drive-by photography. Ask us and we will arrange it properly; we will not sell you a poverty tour.
Load-shedding: supply has been stable recently, but we check the schedule on the morning of every tour and our indoor stops have backup power.
Cape Town tap water is safe to drink.
Dietary needs: tell us at least 48 hours ahead. Vegetarian and halal versions are both workable with notice; the Gatsby and bunny chow both have excellent meat-free versions.
About 2.5 km of walking, mostly flat with one gentle climb.
