Tour description
Banteay Chhmar is one of the largest complexes built during the reign of King Jayavarman VII (late 12th century), who built Bayon and Ta Prohm. Located about 160 km from Siem Reap in Banteay Meanchey Province, the temple receives almost no visitors, and much of it remains as fallen stones amid the forest, just as it was when discovered.
The highlight is the bas-reliefs on the gallery walls: scenes of battles with the Cham army, everyday life, and especially images of the many-armed Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara – a rare feature in Khmer art. You will also see face towers similar to those at Bayon and satellite temples around the ancient reservoir.
At noon, enjoy a meal prepared by the Banteay Chhmar community-based tourism group – revenue that supports temple conservation and local livelihoods. This is a long day tour for archaeology enthusiasts who want to see an 'original' and peaceful Angkor.

Other notes
Dress code: when entering temples, pagodas, and the Royal Palace, please wear clothing that covers the shoulders and trousers/skirts below the knees; sports shoes are recommended because many sections have steep stone steps.
The tour is normally led by an English-speaking local guide; Vietnamese-, French-, Chinese-, Japanese-, Korean-speaking guides, and others can be requested (please state your preference when booking, subject to guide availability).
The price applies per guest, based on a private tour for groups of 2 or more guests. Larger groups receive better rates; please contact us.
Visa: international visitors need a Cambodian visa (apply for an e-visa online before the trip or obtain a visa at a border crossing/airport); citizens of ASEAN countries are visa-exempt. Passports must be valid for at least 6 months.
The itinerary can be changed to a 2-day, 1-night program with a community homestay in Banteay Chhmar (contact us for a quotation). Many areas of the temple consist of fallen stones, so sturdy shoes are required.
