Tour description
Chaul Chnam Thmey (Khmer New Year) takes place over three days, around April 14–16, when the sun enters Aries—the end of the harvest season and just before the first rains. This is when Cambodians return to their hometowns, visit pagodas, offer food to monks, build sand mountains, and splash water to give blessings.
In Siem Reap, in recent years, the Angkor Sankranta Festival has been held within the Angkor Archaeological Park, featuring traditional games such as tug-of-war, blindfolded pot smashing, bos Chhoung (scarf throwing), Apsara dance performances, music, and cuisine from various provinces. At the pagodas, people build Phnom Khsach sand mountains, make offerings, and bathe Buddha statues with scented water.
The itinerary lets you celebrate Khmer New Year with local people while exploring Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, and Ta Prohm, with a guide explaining the meaning of each custom.
