Description du circuit

Tangier spent forty years as an international zone governed by nine countries at once, and it shows in what people eat. Spanish bocadillos, Moroccan tagines and a chickpea tart called kalinti - from the Spanish caliente, hot - sold from carts all day.

We start in the Grand Socco market for olives, cheese, bread and preserved lemons, then eat kalinti hot from the tin with cumin and harissa. From there we walk into the medina, through the Petit Socco, whose cafes were the centre of the city's louche mid-century literary scene, for mint tea and sfenj.

The centrepiece is a fixed-menu seafood house in a stairway off Rue de la Liberte: fish soup, a plate of grilled fish and prawns, and fruit with honey, at a price that does not change and a queue that does not shorten. It has been run by the same family for decades and it does not take bookings.

We finish above the city at a clifftop cafe that has been serving mint tea on terraces cut into the rock since 1921, looking across the Strait to Spain on a clear day.

Small group, maximum 10 guests, with one taxi transfer.
Meeting point:

Grand Socco, Place du 9 Avril 1947, Tangier

We meet in the Grand Socco at Place du 9 Avril 1947, beside the Cinema Rif. Your guide will have a small sign with your name.

Itinéraire détaillé

Stop 1 - Grand Socco market: Rif mountain cheese, olives cured six ways, bread and preserved lemons, with your guide on Tangier's international-zone history.
Stop 2 - Kalinti: A baked chickpea-flour tart, cut from a tin, dusted with cumin and eaten in paper. The name comes from the Spanish for hot, which tells you most of what you need to know about this city.
Stop 3 - Bocadillo and maakouda: A Spanish-style filled roll and fried potato cakes, from a counter on the road between the two Soccos.
Stop 4 - Petit Socco cafes: Mint tea and sfenj in the little square whose cafes were the centre of Tangier's mid-century literary and expatriate scene.
Stop 5 - Fixed-menu seafood house: Fish soup, grilled fish and prawns, then fruit with honey, at a family-run institution in a stairway off Rue de la Liberte. No bookings, no menu, no alcohol.
Stop 6 - Kasbah walk: A guided walk up through the kasbah lanes with views over the port and the Strait.
Stop 7 - Clifftop mint tea: Tea on rock-cut terraces above the sea at a cafe open since 1921, looking towards Spain.

Autres remarques

Runs daily, with a late-morning departure at 10:00 and an evening one at 17:00.
The seafood house does not take reservations and can involve a wait at busy times. Your guide joins the queue ahead of the group where possible; the wait is built into the schedule.
Touting in Tangier is milder than in Marrakech but present around the port and the Petit Socco. Our guides are licensed and will handle it.
Ramadan: daytime service largely stops; we switch to an evening tour for those weeks - ask us.
Alcohol: available in licensed bars and hotels in Tangier, but not at any stop on this route.
Water and hygiene: bottled water only; we use cooked-to-order and high-turnover stalls.
Dietary needs: tell us at least 48 hours ahead. The seafood house is fixed-menu, so tell us in advance if anyone cannot eat fish and we will substitute a tagine house.
About 2 km of walking with a climb into the kasbah, plus one taxi transfer. Not ideal for limited mobility.
