Description du circuit

Glodok has been Jakarta's Chinese quarter since the Dutch confined the community here in 1740. It is the oldest continuously trading district in the city, and on a weekday morning its alleys are a working market rather than a heritage site.

We begin with free ginger tea at a 1910 building that has revived an old Chinese custom of offering tea to passers-by, then walk into Gang Gloria for iced coffee at a shop that has been pouring since 1927 - a narrow room with marble tables where the same family still makes only three drinks. From there we go deep into Petak Sembilan, the market alley behind the Chinese temple: noodles from a stall that has run for generations, steamed rice with chicken and mushroom, kue ape pancakes cooked in dimpled pans, and a wall of tropical fruit and dried goods your guide will translate.

We finish with Betawi food - the cooking of Jakarta's own indigenous people - including kerak telor, a rice and egg crepe cooked over coals with dried shrimp and fried shallot, and nasi uduk, coconut rice with a plate of fried sides.

Small group, maximum 10 guests, entirely on foot.
Meeting point:

Pantjoran Tea House, Jalan Pancoran, Glodok, Jakarta

We meet outside Pantjoran Tea House on Jalan Pancoran in Glodok, a short walk from Glodok station on the Jakarta MRT. Your guide will have a small sign with your name.

Itinéraire détaillé

Stop 1 - Pantjoran Tea House: Free ginger tea offered to passers-by from a 1910 corner building, reviving a Chinese custom, with a plate of dim sum and your guide on Glodok's history.
Stop 2 - Iced coffee since 1927, Gang Gloria: A narrow marble-tabled shop in a temple alley, pouring the same three drinks for nearly a century. Es kopi susu, strong and sweet.
Stop 3 - Petak Sembilan market: The market alley behind the Chinese temple, with your guide translating the dried goods, fruit, herbs and offerings.
Stop 4 - Alley noodles: Bakmi with pork or chicken, wontons and a bowl of clear broth, from a stall that has fed the market for generations.
Stop 5 - Kue ape and market sweets: Green pandan pancakes with crisp lace edges cooked in dimpled pans, plus other pasar snacks.
Stop 6 - Kerak telor: Jakarta's own Betawi dish - sticky rice and duck egg cooked directly over coals in a wok, topped with dried shrimp, fried shallot and grated coconut.
Stop 7 - Nasi uduk: Coconut rice with fried chicken, tempeh, sambal and a hard-boiled egg, the Betawi breakfast plate, with a sweet iced tea to finish.

Politique d'annulation et de remboursement

Autres remarques

Runs daily at 08:00. The morning start matters twice over - Glodok's market is a morning market, and Jakarta's heat and traffic both become punishing after eleven.
Halal note: Glodok is Jakarta's Chinese quarter and much of its cooking is pork-based. For Muslim guests we run a Betawi and Padang route instead, which is entirely halal and just as good. Tell us when you book and we will send you the alternative itinerary.
Getting here: Glodok station on the MRT is a short walk. Do not drive - Jakarta's traffic between 06:30 and 09:30 can turn five kilometres into ninety minutes, and the odd-even plate restriction applies on main roads on weekday mornings.
On Sunday mornings the Car-Free Day closes Sudirman and Thamrin to traffic from 06:00 to 11:00, which makes the city briefly walkable.
Dietary needs: tell us at least 48 hours ahead.
Entirely on foot, about 2 km, with narrow and uneven alleys.
