Description du circuit

At sunset Jemaa el-Fnaa changes. Carts are wheeled out, a hundred numbered kitchens unfold, gas lamps come on and smoke rises over the whole square. It is the most photographed food scene in Africa and the one where visitors most reliably get fleeced.

We do it with the prices agreed in advance, in writing, at one stall your guide has worked with for years. Harira, the tomato, lentil and chickpea soup eaten with dates and a hard-boiled egg. Merguez and lamb kefta off the grill. Zaalouk, the smoked aubergine salad. Then the two things everyone photographs and few try: babbouche, snails simmered in a broth of liquorice root, aniseed and thyme, drunk from the bowl afterwards as a remedy; and, if you want it, sheep's head, which is not a dare here but a delicacy.

Your guide explains what the square was before the food stalls, what the storytellers and Gnawa musicians at the far end are doing, and how the numbered-stall system works.

We finish with mint tea on a rooftop above it all.

Small group, maximum 10 guests.
Meeting point:

Jemaa el-Fnaa, north side near the Koutoubia end, Marrakech

View on map

We meet on the north side of Jemaa el-Fnaa, towards the Koutoubia minaret. Your guide will have a small sign with your name.

Itinéraire détaillé

Stop 1 - The square at dusk: We watch the carts come out and the stalls assemble, with your guide on the square's history and the numbered-stall system.
Stop 2 - Harira: The tomato, lentil and chickpea soup that breaks the fast in Ramadan and is eaten year-round, with dates and a hard-boiled egg.
Stop 3 - Grilled merguez and kefta: Spiced lamb sausage and minced lamb skewers off the charcoal, with bread and a tomato-onion salad.
Stop 4 - Zaalouk and taktouka: Smoked aubergine with garlic and cumin, and a cooked pepper and tomato salad, eaten with bread.
Stop 5 - Babbouche: Snails simmered in a broth of liquorice root, aniseed, thyme and orange peel. You eat the snails with a pin and drink the broth, which locals consider medicinal.
Stop 6 - Sheep's head, optional: Steamed and served with cumin and salt. A genuine delicacy here and entirely your choice - your guide goes first.
Stop 7 - Mint tea and pastries on a rooftop: Overlooking the square, with your guide on the Gnawa musicians and storytellers at the far end.

Autres remarques

Runs daily at 18:30.
On the square, plainly: stall touts will physically steer you, unordered dishes appear on bills, and posted prices are not always the prices charged. Your guide agrees a fixed per-head price with one stall before we sit, counts every dish aloud and pays. That is what you are buying.
Our guides are licensed. Unlicensed guides are illegal in Morocco and persistent here.
Ramadan: during Ramadan the square empties completely fifteen minutes before sunset and then erupts. It is the single best evening of the year to be here and we adjust our timing accordingly - ask us if your dates fall inside it.
Earthquake note: reconstruction after the September 2023 earthquake is largely complete in the medina, but some monuments near the square remain under scaffolding. Your guide will explain what you are looking at.
Alcohol is not served on the square. Licensed restaurants and riads serve it and your guide can point you to them.
Water and hygiene: bottled water only, cooked-to-order stalls, no salads that have been standing.
Dietary needs: tell us at least 48 hours ahead. Vegetarian works via harira made without meat stock, zaalouk, taktouka and bread.
Minimum age 8. About 1 km of walking on flat ground.
